Regent University to Hold 3rd Annual Reel Dreams Competition

Originally posted on Christian Newswire by Judy Black

Regent University’s Reel Dreams Film Competition is back and looking to showcase fresh, new, and talented filmmakers who aspire to make the world a better place through redemptive storytelling.

Sponsored by Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts, Reel Dreams is an annual competition that gives independent filmmakers the opportunity to have their redemptive films reviewed by industry professionals, showcase their work on the Internet and compete for scholarships.

Additional information about this year’s competition can be found on the http://www.reeldreamsfilmfest.com/.

“The mission of the Reel Dreams Film Competition is to empower aspiring film artists to use their talents and abilities to bring creative, redemptive films to the entertainment industry,” explains Michael Patrick, dean of Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts.

Redemptive films are those whose stories portray a carefully-crafted protagonist facing a moral dilemma that leads to good or bad consequences. Through grippingly overt or subtle stories, these films convey positive messages of hope, love and redemption that transform the minds of audiences worldwide.

Films are required to be between three and five minutes in length. Additional rules and submission information can be found on the Reel Dreams website. The submission period for films opens on Jan. 4 and runs until Mar. 9.

Once films are submitted, they will enter the first of three rounds of judging. Initial entries will be narrowed down to the top 25. Those 25 films will then be narrowed down to seven. The top seven finalists will receive an all-expense paid weekend in Virginia Beach, VA for the final event, April 17, 2010, where the grand prize winner will be announced.

Regent University’s School of Communication and the Arts offers degrees in Cinema-Television, Journalism, Theatre, Digital Media, Animation and Communication Studies. Students have won more than 230 awards for their films, publications and theatre performances. On-campus and online degrees are available. Louis Gossett Jr. To Star In Christian Film

Originally posted on EURweb.com

Academy Award winner Louis Gossett, Jr. is lending his talent and good name to a faith-based movie about love and forgiveness.

“The Grace Card” is under production in Memphis, TN., and Gossett leads of a cast of newcomers that could get a boost from his star power.

Gossett plays George Wright, a civil rights pioneer and long-time activist minister who provides wisdom and advice to his grandson Sam, who’s chosen to follow in George’s ministry footsteps. The problem is, Sam Wright’s church is too small and budget-challenged. Sam’s a full-time cop on the tough streets of inner city Memphis, preaching on Sunday.

For veteran screenwriter Howie Klausner, landing Gossett to star in the movie has made top news in Memphis. Klausner said “People want to see big name actors, quality production values and good stories,” adding that “despite conventional Hollywood ‘wisdom’, the gospel and grace is just as real and relevant as a movie theme as it was 2000 years ago.”

Writer David Evans brought his original story to Klausner so the two of them could bring it to the big screen. Evans said he wants the story to motivate Christians in his community to tackle the city’s race problems and work toward healing. The film has already made an impact on the town.

“One of our most important scenes takes place in a predominantly black Memphis church,” says Evans. “Without giving the plot away, actors, crew and hundreds of extras from both black and white congregations were hugging each other and crying because of the subject matter.”

Evans’ church usually puts on an ambitious Easter program but opted to support the film instead this year. Church members help with everything from carpentry to catering on the set. Evans chose to balance the crew with many local and Hollywood-based professionals. Veterans from hit films such as “Walk the Line,” “The Rainmaker,” “Fireproof,” “Scream 2,” and “Bedtime Stories,” are on set.

“It’s a unique combination of volunteer and professional crew,” Memphis Deputy Film Commissioner Sharon Fox O’Guin told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “I’ve rarely seen such passion and dedication to a project.”

The film will complete production later this month and in theaters Spring 2010.

‘Fireproof’ Follow-up About Fatherhood

Charismamag.com reporter Leigh DeVore reports:

The makers of the surprise hit Fireproof will produce a film about fatherhood as their follow-up to the top independent movie release of 2008.

Officials for Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga.—where Fireproof and their earlier films were created–made the announcement during Sunday night’s church service, which drew Christian media members who were flown in for the event.

“The title is one word: Courageous,” said Fireproof Director Alex Kendrick, who will also direct the new film. “[It's about] four fathers who are all in law enforcement—who protect and serve together—[and] go through a terrible tragedy. They begin looking at their role as fathers … and they begin challenging one another to fulfill God’s intention for fathers.”

The film will show the benefits and consequences of the choices the fathers make. “Courageous will include drama, action and humor, but we will maintain our standard of keeping all dialogue honoring to God,” Kendrick told Charisma.

Fireproof Producer Stephen Kendrick, who will also co-write and produce Courageous with his brother, said: “We believe God is calling us as a church family and through movies to call men to rise up to spiritual leadership in their homes.”

Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2010 in Albany, Ga., with a tentative theatrical release date of early 2011. Courageous will be marketed by Provident Films and Affirm Films, the faith label of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Boosted by grass-roots support and bulk ticket purchases from churchgoers as well as some Christian retailers, Fireproof made $33.3 million at the box office, despite a modest $500,000 budget. The movie, which stars Kirk Cameron as a firefighter who turns to God to save his marriage, has been a top-selling DVD at Christian retail since it was released Jan. 27.

Meanwhile, Stephen and Alex Kendrick’s The Love Dare—an integral part of Fireproof—still appears on the New York Times best-seller list a year after its release. It has sold more than 3 million copies and is available in 22 languages.

Alex Kendrick said that God has given them an idea for a book companion for Courageous, much like The Love Dare for Fireproof. “But the horse has to stay before the cart,” he said. “So we’re going in the direction of the movie first.”

The budget for Courageous has not yet been determined, although Alex Kendrick said earlier this year at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention that the film would have an expected budget of $2.5 million–five times larger than with Fireproof.

No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency The Movie

number-1-ladies-detective-agency

I did a quick search on one of my favorite shows, No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency starring Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose and here’s what I found out according to Richard Curtis on HBO’s forum for the show:

There may not be another season of “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency”, but it is not HBO’s fault. They want another season, and so does the BBC. The problem is that the showrunner doesn’t really feel like doing it. The schedule for a full-blown TV series, even with a six-episode season, is discouraging him, mostly because the former showrunner died, and he would prefer making a movie or two for the “No .1 Agency” franchise.

There is no way to know if those TV movies will happen either, because HBO and BBC would prefer a full season of six regular episodes (and so would I, by the way).

Whether it’s a movie or a series on HBO, I want to see more of it!  I can’t wait to see the movie. I know it will be a box office hit.

Lord Save Us From Your Followers Movie

Lord Save Us-Theater

About the movie:

If you were to meet ten average Americans on the street, nine of them would say they believe in God. So why is the Gospel of Love dividing America?

Dan Merchant put on his bumper-sticker-clad jumpsuit and decided to find the reason. After talking with scores of men and women on streets all across the nation, and also interviewing many well-known activists in today’s “Culture Wars,” Dan realized that the public discussion of faith doesn’t have to be contentious.

From its opening Talking Heads sequence through its touching look at faith in action, Lord, Save Us From Your Followers is a fast-paced, highly engaging documentary that explores the collision of faith and culture in America while opening up this important conversation to all of us.

As discussion of religion floods the media, the rhetoric is divisive, hyper, and most often, angry. With humor more common in a comedy-sketch program than a documentary, Merchant brings the sensibilities of someone who is deeply concerned with how his faith is being represented by others. Lord, Save Us provides a provocative, funny, and redemptive discussion that is sure to continue long after the credits run.

Merchant sits down for interviews with well-known people on all sides of this great divide, including best-selling author William Paul Young (The Shack), comedian/politician Al Franken, former “Religious Right” Senator Rick Santorum, noted “liberal evangelical” Tony Campolo, conservative radio host Michael Reagan, and racial reconciliation activist Dr. John Perkins.

If that’s not divergent enough, other features include Bono, Rick Warren, Bill Maher, James Dobson, George Clooney, Jerry Falwell, Stephen Colbert, Ann Coulter, Pat Robertson, Lewis Black, Tony Perkins, Monty Python, and even Stewie from “Family Guy”… along with many others.

Add to that the nationwide man-on-the-street interviews with “Bumper-Sticker Man,” the Culture Wars game show, the “renaming” of St. Paul to New Leningrad, and a controversial and moving “Confession Booth” at Portland’s Gay Pride celebration, and Lord, Save Us From Your Followers delves into religious hot-button issues with candor, humor, and balance.

Engaging, unpredictable, and challenging, Lord, Save Us From Your Followers will change the way you talk about faith!
