Regent University to Hold 3rd Annual Reel Dreams Competition

Originally posted on Christian Newswire by Judy Black

Regent University’s Reel Dreams Film Competition is back and looking to showcase fresh, new, and talented filmmakers who aspire to make the world a better place through redemptive storytelling.

Sponsored by Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts, Reel Dreams is an annual competition that gives independent filmmakers the opportunity to have their redemptive films reviewed by industry professionals, showcase their work on the Internet and compete for scholarships.

Additional information about this year’s competition can be found on the http://www.reeldreamsfilmfest.com/.

“The mission of the Reel Dreams Film Competition is to empower aspiring film artists to use their talents and abilities to bring creative, redemptive films to the entertainment industry,” explains Michael Patrick, dean of Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts.

Redemptive films are those whose stories portray a carefully-crafted protagonist facing a moral dilemma that leads to good or bad consequences. Through grippingly overt or subtle stories, these films convey positive messages of hope, love and redemption that transform the minds of audiences worldwide.

Films are required to be between three and five minutes in length. Additional rules and submission information can be found on the Reel Dreams website. The submission period for films opens on Jan. 4 and runs until Mar. 9.

Once films are submitted, they will enter the first of three rounds of judging. Initial entries will be narrowed down to the top 25. Those 25 films will then be narrowed down to seven. The top seven finalists will receive an all-expense paid weekend in Virginia Beach, VA for the final event, April 17, 2010, where the grand prize winner will be announced.

Regent University’s School of Communication and the Arts offers degrees in Cinema-Television, Journalism, Theatre, Digital Media, Animation and Communication Studies. Students have won more than 230 awards for their films, publications and theatre performances. On-campus and online degrees are available. Woman Wins $20,000 For Reciting 10 Commandments

Originally posted on Word Net Daily

An Ohio woman has won $20,000 in a Tenandwin.com competition that encouraged people to learn the Ten Commandments and be able to recite them – in order – in 20 seconds or less.

The competition was sponsored by Darrel Rundus, much of whose work involves the Great News Network.

The winner was Beth Morris of Akron, Ohio, whose answering machine first picked up the  call from Rundus on Nov. 13. She picked up just as he was explaining he had been calling to offer her an opportunity to recite the Ten Commandments.

She was surprised by the call, but in order to prevent any manipulation of the competition, Rundus asked her to recite the law immediately.

”No other gods before me, no idols, no blasphemy, remember the Sabbath to keep it holy, honor your father and mother, do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not lie, do not covet,” she said.

 It took her 17.5 seconds:

“Oh my goodness, this is such an answer to prayer,” she said. “I’m going to pay off credit cards.  I’m going to buy a car, a used car, our car went out two days ago. I’ve been on the Internet looking for something we could afford. Thank you, Jesus,” she said.

As WND reported, Rundus, a self-made millionaire marketing expert, launched the competition and set up a website to collect telephone numbers of possible participants.

Then, he planned, on the day of the competition he would begin randomly calling entrants, and the first one who could list the law, in order, and do it in 20 seconds or less, would win $20,000.

Rundus told WND he was  distressed that Americans readily can tick off a list of 10 stores, 10 sports teams – even 10 beers, but there’s a collective “Uhmmm” when those same people are asked to cite the Ten Commandments. The project drew the support of Ray Comfort of Living Waters ministry and a partner with actor Kirk Cameron in  The Way of the Master projects.

“Can you name the Ten Commandments?” Comfort’s newsletter asked. “If you can, you could win $20,000.00!!! … Our friend Darrel Rundus will randomly start drawing names and calling people who have registered to ‘Name Ten’ and win $20,000.00. The first qualifying person he gets on the  phone who can list The Law, in order, and do it in twenty seconds or less, will win $20,000.00.”

Entries were collected for several months before the competition was held. There were more than 5,500 people who signed up to possibly get a call with the opportunity, but Morris’ telephone number was the first one randomly drawn by Rundus.

“As a Christian I’m honestly and genuinely intrigued that by the approximate 85 percent of the people around the world today who say they believe in God, but when I asked hundreds of them to name the Ten Commandments, they couldn’t do it,” Rundus said.

“You’re putting me on the spot,” was one of the responses he got.

From a child, it was, “We go to church every Sunday and I don’t know these.”

Morris said she not only worked to memorize the laws, but encouraged others to sign up and do the same.

“Sharing this video with your friends and family over the Thanksgiving holiday is a great way to start up a conversation about the things of God, His laws, His son, our Savior and salvation. I mean, who would not want to watch this video of the amazing story of a woman who won $20,000.00 for just listing God’s laws? Use it as a springboard into a conversation that may just end up saving someone’s soul,” Rundus suggested.

He also said there could be another competition, but nothing has been set up yet.

Bible Bee?

Originally posted on the Salina Journal by Gordon D. Fiedler Jr.

John McDaniel is too young to be called a man of the cloth, but the 11-year-old Salinan can be described as a boy of the page: the Bible page.

McDaniel returned recently from Washington, D.C., were he was among 100 youth in the 11- to 14-year-old age group to participate in the Shelby Kennedy Foundation National Bible Bee.

Although he didn’t make it past the preliminary round, he was pleased with his performance

“I thought I did the best I knew how,” McDaniel said. “I learned that no competition is easy.”

The event was the first of what organizers hope will be an annual event. The foundation is named for a 23-year-old cancer victim, a devote Christian who died in 2005. It is a nonprofit ministry that, according to its Web site, “(encourages) children and youth to grow in Christ through Scripture memorization.”

McDaniel earned the right to compete at the national level by scoring the highest in his age group at a regional contest Sept. 12 in Clay Center.

The Bible Bee is conducted much like a spelling bee, but instead of spelling words, contestants recite Bible verses from memory and also are tested on their general Bible knowledge. And there is an hour-long written test.

At the regional event, contestants had 12 minutes to recite four verses and answer four Bible knowledge questions. One question asked of McDaniel was to name the two languages in which the Bible was written. He was correct in answering, Hebrew and Aramaic.

In each round, the questions became more difficult and the verses grew longer.

Category 1 verses, for instance, were short — a sentence or two. Category 4 verses were about the length of the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution.

Questions and verses ranged over the Old and New testaments — all 66 books.

Fortunately, the Bible Bee organizers offered study guides that included likely verses and questions.

McDaniel decided to take a run at the contest in the spring. The study material was available beginning in late May.

“He’s been working on this throughout the summer,” said his mother, Sheila McDaniel.

The study wasn’t anything new to McDaniel. The McDaniels are never far from the family Bible.

“We’ve been memorizing scripture for a long time,” Sheila McDaniel said. “It’s not a new thing for us. But it’s a whole lot more than we ever did.”

Her son would not disagree. Several times, he said he felt overwhelmed.

“There were tons of contestants,” he said. “I thought I had little chance.”

His confidence returned when he learned he was going to the nation’s capital, his first visit.

“Who’s been to Washington? That’s a rare opportunity for anyone.”

McDaniel made the most of his trip. He toured the major monuments and war memorials and managed to get into the Capitol during the congressional health care debate.

McDaniel didn’t have much trouble getting excused from classes and didn’t even need a note from his mother: He’s home-schooled.

Sheila McDaniel said that worked to his advantage as he prepared for the national contest.

“It would be hard to fit it in to a public school schedule,” she said.

How Sweet The Sound In DC

howsweet

Last night I had the opportunity to attend How Sweet The Sound at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC and it was quite the experience.  The night started off with Donald Lawrence giving his rendition of “Let The Word Work,” with help from members from the competing choirs.

During the competition the audience was blessed with individual performances by the judges, Marvin Sapp, “Never Would Have Made It;” Kelly Price, “Heaven’s Best;” and Tye Tribbett, “I Need You.”

There was one choir in particular, The Remnant Concert Choir from Mt. Ararat Baptist Church located in Pittsburgh, PA whose performance shut the competition down and declared them the winners.  Tye compared the choir and director’s performance to that of O’landa Draper and Rickey Dillard. Marvin Sapp stated that he was ”Speechless.”

The Remnant Concert Choir will represent DC in the finale on November 7th.  A word of advice to all the other choirs, step up your game because I think the Remnant Concert Choir got this one.

Check them out for yourself.
